AWANA was started in Chicago Illinois during the 1940's as a way to reach out to boys and girls who did not go to church on Sunday. Pastor Lance "Doc" Latham of the North Side Gospel Center developed the program with the help of his wife "Teach" and a young man named Art Rorheim. As the uniforms, handbooks, award system and unique game format were developed, God blessed this new endeavor. The AWANA Youth Association was officially organized in 1950 and as other churches saw the program they asked if they could use the same format to start clubs in their areas. The AWANA ministry has grown over the years and has changed to minister effectively to the children of today. Through rapid growth in the early 1980's and into the 1990's AWANA is now in 70 countries and 15 languages. Today the children who gather for AWANA at Grace Baptist join literally hundreds of thousands of children who participate in AWANA clubs worldwide. What happens at AWANA? During the school year, AWANA meets at Grace Baptist on Wednesdays. Check in time is 6:15 and club starts promptly at 6:30 PM. The club time is divided into three 30 minute segments. Game time: Games are played around the AWANA circle (Cubbies have their own special game time and area) Handbook time: Small groups meeting with trained leaders emphasizing Bible memorization. Council time: Singing, announcements, a short Bible story and award presentations. Children enjoy special "Theme Nights" at Grace Baptist. |
