The Life
1 John 5:12-13

Dr. Grant Hodges

How do we attempt to purchase life in 2010?
Considering your answers, how do they differ from what Jesus Christ offers us, "everlasting life" or "eternal life"?
What is the most important concept in the idea of "eternal life"? Considering your answer, can eternal life be revoked and still be "eternal life"?
The book of Romans is the essential doctrinal epistle of the New Testament. Why do we say this? What are the advantages of determining faith and practice from a purely doctrinal epistle, as opposed to deducing doctrine from parables or anecdotes in other portions of the Scripture? Why do we use doctrinal epistles like Romans and Ephesians to interpret parables and anecdotes in the Bible, instead of the other way around?
What does Romans 6:23 say about eternal life?
What does Romans 11:29 say about gifts and calling of God?

I. The Life That God Gives Believers Is Different in Quality from the Life All Men Live Now
Identify the context of "life" in verse 12, using verses 11 and 13.
Read Romans 16:26 and determine what is said about the life of God.
How are we united with Christ (Romans 6:5-6; Ephesians 1:22-23)?
What is the result of our union with Christ as His body in I Corinthians 12:27 with regard to the giving of gifts (verse 28-31)? Is the reality of the gifting of spiritual gifts any different from the reality of the gifting of eternal life by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12:8-13)?
So what is it about eternal life that makes it eternal?

II. Dealing with Proof Texts That Attack the Eternality Of Eternal Life
Psalm 51:11 Explain the difference between the episodic Old Testament ministry of the Holy Spirit, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost. How does this explain what Psalm 51:11 means?
What is the superiority of eternal life to "the good life"?

III. The Apostle John, by the Holy Spirit, confirms what God has done for Believers verse 13
I John 5:13. Looking at verse 13, what is assurance of salvation based upon?
