Hope for the Discouraged Caught in Sin 1 John 2:1-6 Dr. Grant Hodges Why do observant Orthodox Jews refuse to eat milk and meat at the same meal? See Exodus 23:19. What have they attempted to do by constructing this “hedge about the law”? What does that say about the Law? Discuss II Peter 1:3 in the light of “refusing milk and meat at the same meal.” I. God Wills Us Not to Sin, And This Is Key To Our Walk With Christ verse 1a, 3-6 Does a “hedge” define sin? What definitely does? (cf. I John 3:4) Discuss our motivation to avoid sin (5-6). What are the benefits of avoiding sin in terms of verses 5-6? Is there a sin that can permanently separate us from the love of Christ? II. Scripture is Safe As It Is!!! versus 1-2 Discuss the old “holiness” doctrine of Arminianism (we must work to keep ourselves saved) in terms of which will keep people away from sin the best, telling them they can lose their salvation, or reading them verses 1-6. (For many this is not an open and shut case.) What are the difficulties with practicing a “hedge” against sin like Arminianism or Judaizing? III. God Is Keeping His People Safe from Sin verses 1a-2 How does changing the translation of “and” to “but” change the meaning of verse 1? Have you ever tried to “explain away” a Scripture? (e.g. Luke 18:6) What is the message of Verse 1 to those who are caught in sin? |
